RPGs, at least in previous generations, usually use fairly static data, so editors and live cheats are really on par with each other. Games where the values jump around like frogs on fire are really frustrating to make cheats for. However, I do admit that for some games, a save editor is a better idea. Live cheats are better because they save time and effort. You have to find at least one of the item, save your game, then edit your save. You can't just hexedit in an item you don't have and add to the amount. You'd literally have to edit the game every time you want something to change, because the data may not be there before certain things transpire.
